Type and grid - workshop 1/ presentation & publication

In todays session Phil assigned us a short brief, the task was to design a type of publication which informed students about our knowledge of 'typography and type design'.

During the session phil presented to us information regarding the fibonacci sequence and how it can be applied to elements of graphic design from using the golden sequence.

Presentation

Grid and proportions

Fibonacci sequence:
The sequence is not only evident within design but in nature, the division in paper, not about measurement more about proportions.
The human face follows the ratio and we find peoples faces are truer to the ratio more attractive.
Classic renaissance painting - Mona lisa

A series of numbers in which each number is the sum of two preceding numbers
0+1=1
1+1=2
1+2=3
1+3=4

55 point should be complemented with 34 point body copy by applying fibonacci sequence

Golden section:
1.62 is the golden number
Forms the basis paper sizes and its principles can be used as a means of achieving balanced designs.
Many ancient cultures from egyptians to the Greeks used this thinking to gain beautiful designed proportions.

Below are the slides he presented, i have blogged these as they are useful to come back to for relevant pieces of information.

After this Phil set us a task for next weeks session, we have to go away and look further into the fibonaicci sequence, look for examples for how it is applied to design and look at the similarities in paper sizes. The task is it use the golden section technique and chose a ratio closest to the 1cm range and develop a custom made paper size for us to use in the next session.

Paper size using the fibonacci sequence:

Here is the number sequence i invented:

1+4=5
4+5=9
5+9=14
9+14=23
14+23=37
23+37=60
37+60=97
60+97=157
97+157=247
